AppStore - Reader Beware!
Saturday, 06 September 2008
I wanted to post a copy of what I just posted on the AppStore for everyone here to read. JetSet appears to be underfire on the AppStore by its competitors. If you don’t believe me take a look at the now solid stream of 1 star reviews for the product.

Read my post and then I have further comments at the end.

We are of course concerned when we see one-star reviews for the product. We recognize that people will either like or dislike the application and will rate the product accordingly. However, the AppSore is a place of business and not a playground. Reviews are intended to relate buyers’ perception of features and quality of the application. Sadly it is evident that some are using this forum for nefarious purposes. We have positively identified one competitor who posted a one-star review and we think that is unfair and potentially libelous. Another one-star reviewer wrote our feature of 100+ sub-categories is non-existent. Of course, this too is inaccurate. These sub-categories appear under “Miscellaneous” expenses.  In addition, there are some “reviewers” who appear to have created iTunes accounts just to place negative reviews on a number of products on the AppStore. Ironically we have no support emails that echo these reviews. We feel it is important to inform potential customers of JetSet and other applications of these issues so you can make an informed buying decision when browsing the AppStore.

Is JetSet for everyone? No. Does it have all the features everyone wants at this time? No. Does it crash from time to time?  Sometimes—some people report crashes (especially related to the camera feature) and some report no issues.  We do believe that some issues may be related to the 2.02 firmware, and the 2.1 firmware in beta should address these.

We post information regarding future updates of JetSet at www.britemac.com. We encourage all customers to contact us with support issues and suggestions for future releases. We are actively working on adding currency support and a number of other customer requested features, as well as fixing reported bugs.

BriteMac stands behind its products. We are responsible developers and will work through problems and provide solutions in a timely manner. If you purchased JetSet and are unhappy for any reason please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . We will work to resolve your issue. If you are still not satisfied with the product we will offer a full refund.

We have received countless emails and customer reviews in the App Store (all of which are authentic) from users who appreciate and enjoy using JetSet. Everyone is encouraged to read all reviews when purchasing a product from the AppStore so that you can make an informed decision prior to purchase.

We are proud of our featured position on the AppStore. Apple does not select applications to be featured based on just trusting the words of those who write reviews - either positive or negative

Thanks for reading this.

We have been watching with interest the amount of “gaming” that is going on with the AppStore. What I mean by gaming is that there are a number of individuals actively trying to manipulate their placement on the store ranking system by posting negative reviews, which impact sales, which drop the popularity rank of an application.  If you can impact this statistic enough you will change the order in which the applications appear when checking for most popular. Ranking by most popular is one of the ways potential customers tell which application is hot or not.

I might add that there are some who are making their applications free to get their download count high and then converting the free application to a paid application keeping their download count forcing them to the top 100 applications on the store. Some might find this clever—but we find it misleading.

Still others are posting 5 star reviews to swing the buyer into believing that their application is great. BriteMac has been accused of this and this simply is not true.

JetSet has enjoyed nearly 12 solid days of excellent reviews and strong sales. After being  featured by Apple we were immediately placed under attack. Now we understand that people will write negative reviews about an application they do not like—and that is fine. What we don’t understand is why reviewers will go that extra step and tell potential customers that they suspect a scam or put fear in the minds of customers as to the security of the application. One reviewer actually wrote that they were fearful of entering their Google account information for as we might be monitoring such activity.  We investigated one such reviewer and found out that he was a company representative from a competitor. We will be contacting this company on Monday.

Other things you should know. When developers release an update to the AppStore they get marked as new to the category. The benefit to the developer is that their application now appears at the top of the list again on the iPhone. The iPhone will only show what is new in a given category and by the date of the release of the update and not the release of the application. This is a quirk that I am sure Apple will one day address as developers are posting in some cases “do nothing” updates to change their ranking in the new section of a given category in the store.

The point is that Apple will need to take steps to keep the AppStore marketplace a safe place for people to shop.

I felt it was necessary to share why I posted the letter on the AppStore in case you revisited the section and were worried about the quality of the application based on the reviews.
