Here is where you can find answers to common questions about JetSet for the iPhone.

Uploading Expense Reports

Q: How do I get the expense report out of JetSet and somewhere I can use?

A: JetSet offers two ways to get your expense reports off the phone. The first method, which is the simplest, is the mail feature. You touch the mail button on the tool bar and immediately the report is attached to a body of an email that you can send to anyone you like. Once the person has received it they may copy the expense report following the directions within the body of the message into Excel by a simple copy/paste.

The second method (preferred?) is the use of a Google account. Google gives anyone who registers for an account access to a system they call Google Docs. Google Docs is their version of Office. You’ll find a fully functional spreadsheet there as well as Google Mail and their word processor. JetSet will post your file (once you provide account information) to your Google Docs account. This information is private—assuming no one else has your password.

Information on Google Docs is located at http://www.google.com/docs

Q: If I use the Mail feature why does it attach the expense report to the body of the message instead as an attachment?

A: Currently this is a limitation of the iPhone SDK provided by Apple. If this situation changes we will release an update that attaches the document to the email.

Q: Does JetSet provide me with a simple CVS file that I have to process into some usable form?

A: No! JetSet produces a CSV file that is either posted to Google Docs or is placed in the body of an email using Apple’s Mobile mail client on the iPhone. The current layout of the report provides summary with a total for the expense-reporting period along with detail for information for meals, mileage and miscellaneous expenses. The intent is that all you may need to do is widen columns and otherwise “pretty up” the report but what you receive from JetSet is usable immediately. In the future we are going to explore adding RAW CSV support if people want to process their own data and perhaps a full Excel file that contains formatting information.

Google Spreadsheet Questions
Q: Why when I post to Google Docs can I not send a tab delimited expense report instead of a comma delimited expense report?

A: We wondered that as well as we developed the capability for the iPhone. We were surprised to learn that Google only supports comma delimited files and not TAB delimited.  JetSet knows ths and only sends comma delimited files to Google Spreadsheet.

Q: What if I want to post an expense report to Google and it contains commas?

A: This is not a problem as JetSet will remove an replace the commas in your expense report with a dash '-' so that you can properly upload to Google.

The Work Flow
Q: How do I delete an expense report or an expense item?

A: Using your finger--slide it from left to right over any given expense item or report. A Delete button will appear. Touch this to delete the expense report or the expense item.

Q: I like the work flow but I am confused as to why I see a calculator when I am asked to enter an amount. Why is this?

A: The answer is—how many times have you wished you could divide  an expense amount with someone and didn’t have a calculator handy to do it? You have the option in JetSet to just enter the number in the calculator and touch ‘Enter Amount’ or do any calculation you like.

Q: When I add an expense a new expense report and touch the Done button I will sometimes see the message “You must name your expense report” when I have actually given the expense report a name. What I am doing wrong?

A: Actually this is a bug and it will be addressed in an update due out soon. The good news is that it is harmless. Just hit the Done button on the keyboard before touching Done at the top of the screen and all will be fine.

Q: Can I track multiple expense reports?

A: Yes! Just touch the + button on the tool bar from the main screen of the application.

Q: I receive a cash advance from my company—how do I track this with JetSet?

A: We do not have a official feature for this yet—but a good work around is to create a Miscellaneous expense and then type in Cash Advance. Then enter a negative expense amount. This description and amount will be shown at the end of the expense report. We will look into adding a specific feature for this in the future.

The Databases
Q: I have a friend who has JetSet on his iPod Touch. He doesn’t have the ability to dial the contact in the database. Why is this?

A: The iPod Touch is not a phone. The dial button is disabled. You will still see the phone number on the iPod Touch however!
iPhone Camera Support

The Camera
Q: Why when I take a picture of a receipt and later view it in the expense report is the image lower quality?

A: This is to save storage on your iPhone. When you take a picture of a receipt the picture is saved in two places. It is saved in your iPhone's photo album as well as within the JetSet expense database. Since the high quality image is only needed for syncing and perhaps later printing on your PC or Macintosh we only keep a reference image around in the actual expense report.

Q: Why do I not see the camera button when I am adding an expense?

A: JetSet looks at the device it is running on and will only show the camera features if it finds a camera on the device. Sorry iPod Touch users you do not have a camera!

Q: When I take a photo will it attach the photo directly to the expense report either through email or through Google Docs?

A: No. Currently the SDK does not allow the attachment of documents (including pictures) to email. Further Google Spreadsheet does not support the attachment of images. The good news is that you can get the images to your computer as the images that you capture are synced with your PC or Mac the next time you connect your phone to iTunes.

Q: Sometimes I do not see the picture (or the app crashes) after I take a picture. Why does this happen?

A: As of the 2.0.2 firmware there still can be situations in the iPhone environment where there simply is not enough memory available to take a picture. We have been working on ways to detect this case and better handle the situation should it happen but as of version JetSet 1.0 We have not come up with a good work around.  The good news is that restarting the phone solves the problem nicely. We will update the FAQ if the situation changes.

 Next Release

A: Absolutely. This is planned in the next release along with a number of improvements that are in development.

Q: Are you planning support for French, German and Spanish?

A: Yes! Look for these to be available soon.
