AppStore - Reader Beware! |
|
Saturday, 06 September 2008 |
I wanted to post a copy of what I just posted on the AppStore for everyone here to read. JetSet appears to be underfire on the AppStore by its competitors. If you don’t believe me take a look at the now solid stream of 1 star reviews for the product.
Read my post and then I have further comments at the end. |

JetSet Status Update (v1.01) |
|
Friday, 05 September 2008 |
Greetings all,
I have shifted gears a bit and have decided to go ahead and release a 1.01 update that fixes some small things I have encountered and you have reported in your email. The 1.01 update will include the following fixes:
- Updated help system that tells people how to delete an expense item or expense report. If you are visiting the site looking for this information simply look in the FAQ for the answer. It is as easy as running your finger from left to right!
- Tried to reduce memory usage when dealing with the camera. Some users are reporting issues that taking pictures crashes the application. I have spent a great deal of time on this and had a situation where it was happening. What seems to be happening is that the iPhone OS is dumping the program with an out of memory error. The thing is—the iPhone is dumping in the middle of the Apple code for taking the picture. What is more interesting is that resetting the phone (hard reset holding the top button and the home button and NOT using the slider) resolves the problem. After this reset I was able to take 60 pictures in a row without a crash. Still the code in the 1.01 update is tighter and it might help the problem. |

JetSet is on the AppStore & Your Feedback |
|
Saturday, 23 August 2008 |

Well it has been a very interesting couple of days. JetSet is released and while not showing in the "What's New" section of the AppStore many people have found it in the Business section. There was a lot of feedback today and some pretty nice reviews (Thank you!). Here are a few things that came up in the email that I would like to share. One thing that I heard loud and clear today is that I need to rethink my plan on currency. It is very clear now that I have to be more inclusive in the number of currencies that must be supported. Many people made it clear that there is more than the Euro, Pound and the US/Canadian dollar in the world! |

Now the Waiting Begins! While I wait I am working on the next release, which will set up the support necessary for localization and currency support. I am looking to translate the product into French and German as a priority. I am looking for a few folks who are willing to do the text translation – I promise to make it worth your while. I am also looking to have someone compile the necessary European databases for the major hotels, rental car companies and airlines. I am not quite sure how long it is going to take to get the product localized—but getting the software ready for the localization is part of the focus of the 1.1 update. So how will currency work? My current plan is somewhat involved. What I want to do is continue to keep the program easy to use. My plan is for you to set, using the iPhone system settings, the default currency that you do business in. Failure to set this will default the software to the US dollar. |

I have been hard at work lately up to the wee hours finishing up JetSet. It has been actually a great experience all in all. The iPhone SDK is really well done and Apple has provided many examples.
What I am looking forward to is a stability update to the firmware that will help isolate problems with 3rd party applications versus the iPhone operating system. Right now it is very difficult to determine whether a crash is caused by something in application code or something going wrong in the underlying operating system. The development tools are a work in progress no doubt Apple is going to focus their efforts in providing us with the best way to identify issues in our applications.
In any case we are all enjoying a new beginning. Some may think the iPhone is just yet another smart phone but most of us old timers know better. It is really the start of something great.
Where is my iTablet anyway?
